Bearing

The term ‘bearing of an object’ defines the angle that is formed between the direction of the north and the imaginary line between the observer and the object.

The term ‘relative bearing’ defines the angle that is formed between the direction of the vessel’s bow and the imaginary line between the observer and the object.

In accordance with the direction of the North, from which the measurement starts, the bearings are divided in:

1. True Bearing

2. Magnetic Bearing

3. Compass Bearing

True bearings are measured in degrees holocyclic from 000 to 360 degrees.

Relative Bearings are measured from 000 to 360 degrees to the right or to the left of the bow and thereby are characterized as Right- green or Left- red.
